STORIES IN THE DARK

Set against the backdrop of a war-torn city, the play follows a terrified young boy, Tomas (Spencer Mitchell), who has been separated from his family. Seeking shelter, Tomas hides in the darkness of a bombed-out theatre where he encounters Anna (Leisel Hussey), an older, streetwise girl who is also trying to survive the chaos of war. Initially guarded and dismissive of his fear, she begins to tell him stories—partly to distract him, and partly to cope with her own reality.
The play offers a dual narrative of sorts, shifting between the war torn world of Anna and Tomas’ reality and the stories brought to life in their theatre refuge. These worlds are crafted compellingly by Nicole Madden’s production design and direction and brought to life by the small, multi-aged ensemble. By bringing together performers from children through to adults, Madden, assisted by Sherene B. Mitchell, crafts a space where the opportunities of theatre and storytelling are not just promoted in the tale but evidenced through the collaboration of performers of varying degrees of experience, reminding the audience that the desire and capacity to imagine and create is not bound by age.
Most impressive are the young actors taking on the principal roles. Spencer Mitchell defies their young years to manage the responsibility of bringing Tomas to life – engaging meaningfully with script and blocking to present a realistic emotional journey from vulnerability to courage. Leisel Hussey, a little older and with somewhat more acting experience, simply shines, providing a firm foundation for Mitchell and the entire ensemble. She commands the stage, presents her character unapologetically, and captivates the audience with every word, move and look of teenage angst.

The heart of Henry Lawson Theatre is to tell stories that make an impact through an inclusive experience of theatre that enriches the lives of its performers and audiences alike. This production epitomises that vision.
Applause for inclusive, heartfelt storytelling.
